As to the empty or incomplete search box:
-- open Windows Explorer and find the srchasst.inf file in the Windows\Inf folder; --
right-click on that file and click Install on the context menu; -- have your
WXP CD nearby; -- reboot when the process is done.
Note: the Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You need to make sure that on
the View tab of Windows Explorer Folder Options, "Show hidden files and folders"
is checked.
