New installation - error loading operating system

Hello,
I had a dual boot (XP, Fedora Core 4) on my hard drive (40G Maxtor DiamondMax), but
bought a new motherboard (Foxconn 6100) and processor (Athlon 64 3500+) and want
to reinstall both O/S as previously.
FIrst attempt was successful, but couldn't get Linux to boot. Decided to just
use XP, but reinstall gave me the blue screen/unmountable_boot_volume. I tried fixmbr
and fixboot from the Recovery Console, to no avail. I reinstalled (again), and now
all I get is Error loading operating system on the black screen. I've tried deleting
and recreating the partitions, tried on one partition (the whole drive) both NTFS
and FAT32 file systems through the XP installer with no success. I've tried changing
the BIOS to LBA, CHS and also to Auto, and used the optimised defaults - all unsuccessful.
I tested the hard drive with PowerMax from Maxtor - all tests passed. I did a
full low level format (writes 0's to the disk) and a re-install still gave the Error
loading operating system error.
Please help me - I'm at my wit's end and just want any O/S to work! Do I need
to buy a new hard drive, even though the Maxtor diagnostics says it is error free?
Cheers, Lisa
