Well I spent quite a while working on it and in the end I failed. I had 2 days to
work on it and I got most of the problems taken care of, but inn the end I just didnt
have enough time to work on it. My next step if I could have gotten the Norton to
finish without crashing was a boot-time scan/defragment. On the last virus sweep
before the computer crashed it managed to find 65 infected files, scanned 90000 files
and then crashed on me before it finished. I came to the determination that the laptop
was probably overheating so i propped it up and started the scan again. Before it
even got halfway through my brother showed up with his girlfriend needing to pick
up the computer. I told them what i did, and what i couldn't do and told them I would
recommend re-formating to avoid any future headaches, with the fix. They don't really
have a whole lot of computer know-how so they would of ended up bursting the computer
into flames before reparing the problem. The spyware wasn't really all that hard,
except for the last piece mentioned in the post by Carol J. Unfortunately I didn't
check back here when I woke up, and the two just ran off with the laptop a day earlier
then they said they would. Luckily I wasn't defeated by this computer I learned quite
a bit, and think next time I'll be more successful in tackling the problem.
Thanks for everyones help,
Ron
