My problem turned out to be Divx.
About a week ago (after installing the latest divx) explorer.exe started to crash
when navigating to a directory with avi files.
I solved that problem myself. I unisntalled divx, went to oldversion.com and got
an older version, which ran up until a night or two ago, and the problem started
again. I tried the reg hack. I disabled the thumbnail viewer, nothing worked.
So I uninstalled divx again and hit a major snag. The uninstall program would hang
on regsvc32 /s /u divxdec.ax.
I tried to manually remove the service, and the run prompt hanged. After a reboot,
I went to the windows/system32 directory, took all the files named divx*.* and put
them into a temp folder, and re-rebooted. On logon, I uninstalled divx without error,
and the explorer.exe crash was gone.
Now all that's left is for me to find a working divx codec ;)
Thanks for all the help everyone.
