The way I did this was open a toolbar on the start menu and then drag it off to the side. After fooling around with dual monitor/extended desktop support, and then deciding not use a dual monitor setup until I got a better 2nd monitor, I found that my side toolbar disappeared and using my method to drag it off the start menu doesn't work.
