Call Microsoft and explain your situation, because only
they have the power to fix it. If they make you buy a new
copy, then you'll need to seek a refund from the seller.
Depending on your situation, you might be able to avoid
a reinstall. However, if I were you I would strongly
consider doing a reformat and clean reinstall anyway,
because a laptop with a pirated copy of XP has about an
85 percent probability of being infested with malware!
However with a laptop better spend some time on the
manufacturer's website prior to reinstalling, because
you may well need some drivers that a retail copy of XP
won't have -- laptops are notorious for having oddball
proprietary hardware that needs special drivers.
