There's a pretty good chance the key that came with the
laptop was used to activate a pirated copy of XP on another
machine and that's why it is being rejected now. This sort
of thing is one of the reasons buying a used computer can
be somewhat dicey. Actually, if I were seeking a cheap
computer I'd plan on reformatting whatever I got and
putting Linux on it -- much safer all around. I use both
Linux and Windows, and each has its advantages, but
in the case of Windows I strongly recommend getting
a brand-new computer that comes with Windows. The
retail price is so much more than what computer makers
pay for an OEM license, and the performance demands
of Windows so large, that it really only makes sense to
get Windows with a new computer. For a used computer,
which is likely to be older hardware, Linux does a much
better job of getting reasonable performance out of it.
The biggest downside of Linux is that less mass-market
software and peripherals are available for it, but you can
do all the basics using stuff that comes with typical Linux
distributions, and for the typical usage of a secondary
computer that's quite adequate. Linux is also my own
preferred environment for doing geeky stuff that involves
writing my own code (mostly in Perl and Java), but that's
another subject...
