Just to add my own experience to this.
I had the now infamous mup.sys problem this morning for the first time. It happened
on my 2 year old tablet PC running Windows XP tablet edition that has worked fine
up until now. No hardware or software has been added in several months apart from
the standard Windows and anti-virus updates.
I tried all the BIOS suggestions but no joy so moved on to the Recovery Console.
That didn't help as I kept getting errors when trying to view the C: drive so this
led me to think it was a file corruption or disk corruption problem. Of course I
couldn't run chkdsk within the Recovery Console as it wouldn't read the C: drive
so I booted with my BartPE Windows XP run disk and was able to use its disk check
utility. Several errors were found in files as well as space allocation errors but
after fixing all these I was able to boot into Windows repeatedly without a problem.
