How to enable thumbnail preview?

I'm having trouble viewing the preview picture in thumbnail view in all my folders. I was able to view a small preview of the pictures in the past (when viewed in thumbnail mode). So I could see what the picture is before actually opening it. But now all I see are icons of the program the picture would open with once I click on it. I'm getting annoyed at needing to open every file to see what the picture is. Filmstrip doesn't work either. Any help??
