After messing with the registry in more than half of the ways mentioned earlier,
I had it where I would end up a few windows deep before it started opening folders
in the same window. It was also showing the annoying tree on the left instead of
the tasks. So, even though I wanted just the opposite of the post I'm responding
to (i.e., I wanted the task, not explorer, on the left, I went to Tools -> Folder
Options -> File Types -> (NONE) Folder -> Advanced, and after messing with the registry
so much there APPEARED to be no default action set (neither open nor explore was
in bold). I set open to be the default action and this fixed everything! So even
if you've already done this... go back here after messing with the registry and re-set
open to default - it might work for you, too...
