Tried everything here and nothing worked. So on a hunch, I deleted a number of folders that used thumbnail photo icons. And shazaam!! The #$@% thing works fine now. I think the photo icons used up too much memory dedicated to folder options. Conclusion: Use only simple graphic icons for folders.
