Question about 'Windows Installer Appears Every Time I Start an Application'

My PC (Acer Travelmate laptop, PM 1.6, XP Home SP2) suddenly started asking for the
Word 2002 installation disc but *only* when I launch either Excel 2002 or Registry
Mechanic.
I have run antivirus (Zonealarm) and spyware (Zonealarm and Spyware Doctor) and a
registry scan (Registry Mechanic), and all is clear.
With Excel, the dialogue box pops up once or twice whilst Excel is launching; with
RM, it pops up four or five times whilst RM is launching. In both cases, I can just
click on cancel and the desired app works fine afterwards.
Word 2002 is sitting there and working fine.
FYI, I installed an OEM copy of Word 2002 first and then Office XP (well, Excel and
Powerpoint) some months after that. Registry Mechanic has also been on my PC for
a few months problem-free.
I am not aware of having deleted any appropriate files, but frankly am at a loss.
