I had the same problem with the " C-Media AC97 Audio Device" driver not working properly
after reinstalling windows xp pro. I am not sure why, as I was previously running
xp pro and my soundcard worked fine. Anyway, I first tried rolling back drivers
as was suggested above, however, there was no previous driver installed because I
reformatted my hard drive before the the most recent installation. Next, I opened
the casing to my computer and looked on the mother board and found that I had a SIS
916 sound card installed. I was able to find the appropriate driver at www.sis.com
(the SIS 7012 audio device driver), which solved my problem.
For whatever reason, it seems that XP pro misrecognizes various sound cards as the
C-Media AC97, and installs the wrong driver. I suggest that whoever has this problem
first looks on their motherboard to see what type of sound card they have (or perhaps
their computer's documentation, if they still have it) before they spend countless
hours downloading random drivers.
Hope this helps.
