Like I said, I've been using this method for quite a while on hundreds of mahcines
(no exagerration), and haven't experienced what you're describing. The systems that
I've worked with all deal with camera cards and CDs (burning and reading) on a daily
basis.
I'm not saying that this is the only way to deal with AutoPlay, merely another approach
to it. I've posted it because it is a solution that has worked for me in the past.
As with any other change a user makes to their system, they should test it out and
make sure it doesn't affect their workflow in an undesirable fashion.
I have a feeling the symptoms you're experiencing are environmental, like having
some other feature/service service enabled/disabled, or it could be as simple as
the fact you're using a notebook, which may cause Windows to adjust things automatically.
