Is the card recognized as an OHCI compliant 1394 controller, or just as a mysterious
something that can't figure out what it is?
The only time I have ever had a card not be recognized when being plugged into a
functional PCI slot was a modem. It turned out that on this particular computer
which had been in service for a while and was a little dusty inside, some dust had
worked its way into the slot and was preventing contact on the "golden fingers" that
are responsible for transmitting the ID of the card.
So if you think that might be it, yank the card, give the chassis a REALLY good blowout
with compressed air, and it wouldn't hurt to run the golden fingers with a soft pencil
eraser too.
