It seems the mup.sys problem is related to Windows XP not recognizing the hardware
properly anymore.
I have been through all the hints and tips posted here, but none worked for me.
I found a solution that works for me, and it involves forcing XP to re-detect its
hardware. My solution assumes you have XP installed to 'c:\windows'.
1. Boot from the XP-setup cd and start the recovery console.
2. Log in with your admin-account.
3. Type
cd c:\windows\system32\config
ren system system.bak
cd c:\windows\repair
copy system c:\windows\system32\config
Now you can reboot the computer and XP will start normally. It will install some
of the drivers of the newly detected hardware automatically. For other drivers you
need to tell Windows to search for them (no need to go online, though) or provide
the drivers yourself.
