I think you may be on to something with the CHKDSK. Obviously, you're looking for
something that tries to run before windows goes through its normal drivers startup.
Do
you get the same problem if you start in safe mode? If nothing else, starating in
safe mode may allow you to see what's being loaded. Do you have any kind of hardware
or software RAID loaded? How about SCSI devices? Raid and SCSI load before windows
drivers load. Frequently the BIOS does some kind of RAID scan (if configured) - and
if there's something going on that could cause the raid to fail, I could see this
issue occur. Of course, this is just speculation.
