Bad mamory will usually cause a BSOD or data corruption and associating error messages (check your Event Viewer). IME, it will never just power down a machine without warning (unless it would directly short out and cause a power problem). Powering down without warning it usually due to powersupply problems (or unstable incoming power), heat or a hardware device failure/instability (which could be difficult to track down without the proper tools).
