First, I was greatly pleased to find this thread on this subject.
I started having this problem after renewing with Symantec (and upgrading from NIS
2005 to NIS 2006 at the same time).
I was most interested in the previous note with respect to Dell QuickSet. Although
prior to the upgrade to NIS 2006 I had not seen this specific problem - previous
to the NIS 2006 upgrade I had seen QuickSet use 100 percent of the CPU. Sometimes
I would simply have to terminate the process and restart the system.
Frankly I am afraid of REGEDIT. Specifically I am afraid I will inflict system damage
with REGEDIT. So, I used Mike Lins' Startup Control Panel freeware (www.mlin.net)
to remove QuickSet from the HKLM RUN list.
To date I have not noticed any change in the time to start up Windows XP Professional
on my Dell Inspirion 8600.
I am normally very reluctant about freeware, but, had saw a reference to his product
in the Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out Deluxe Edition (Microsoft Press).
Thought I would make note of Mike Lin's freeware in the oft chance there are others
out there like myself who are fearful of REGEDIT.
As of this date, I am current on all MS XP and MS Office updates.
So far so good. Will keep you posted.
