OK. Yet more progress and, I hope, some that will enable all this to come to an end. Perhaps I speak too soon? I used Windows Task Manager to shut down ALL programmes that were not "system", WTM itself and explorere.exe. I still could not shut IE even though Panda had been uninstalled. Therefore, going by the earlier discovery that closing explorer allows the browser to close completely, it follows that somewhere explorer has gained permission to access the internet. I seem to remember that there is a control in XP that allows some system programmes to do just that. Am I right and, if so, where is it? I am presuming this to be the source of my problem.
