OK. Yet more progress and, I hope, some that will enable all this to come to an end.
Perhaps I speak too soon?
I used Windows Task Manager to shut down ALL programmes that were not "system", WTM
itself and explorere.exe. I still could not shut IE even though Panda had been uninstalled.
Therefore, going by the earlier discovery that closing explorer allows the browser
to close completely, it follows that somewhere explorer has gained permission to
access the internet. I seem to remember that there is a control in XP that allows
some system programmes to do just that. Am I right and, if so, where is it?
I am presuming this to be the source of my problem.
