I encountered the same problem described in this thread. Wanted to thank everyone
for posting information over the past couple of years. I tried everything suggested
here-- USB, BIOS, chkdsk, swapping memory. Nothing seemed to work. Unfortunately
my computer had no XP disk by itself (only a full reinstall from oem). I wasn't motivated
to try to burn a boot cd, so I ended up plugging in and booting from another hard
drive and backed up the files I needed. After a complete reinstall of XP everything
seems to be working fine now. I'm fairly certain in my case something in Windows
had been corrupted.
To any Microsoft employees who happen to read this, please tell your OS guys it's
better to PRINT OUT A BRIEF MESSAGE TO LET US KNOW WHAT ITS CHOKING ON BEFORE YOU
REBOOT THE COMPUTER-- thanks >:(. Even the boot log in the windows directory had
no useful information once I started up from the functional hard drive.
