Solution!
No need to restore!
Controlpanel->admin tools-> computer management->drivers somehow
right click multimedia audio controller...told me driver is missing.
I clicked, install this driver & it installed realtek ac 97 for my compaq running
XP. Driver details points to file: c:\system\alcxmntr.exe.
Not quite sure how I got there...but keep hunting, you'll get there. When I clicked
search for new hardware or went thrrough trogbleshoot could not find resolve...just
played around and got it working. I wonder if a virus erased this file since so
many people impacted.
Thats all I know..please don't ask me questions via email...I'm an expert in databases
not PCs.
HTH.
