Thank you Rick for suggesting that Universal Plug & Play was the problem. I also
had the problem of system tray icons disappearing to the "Past Items" section. I
stumbled across your post and it had the answer for me.
However, the easier way to fix this problem is to uninstall UPnP (the root of the
problem) rather than disabling those services, which are part of it. It can be uninstalled
by going to Network Places and there should be a link saying 'Hide icons for networked
UPnP devices'.
If Micorsoft does know about the problem, the tech support person I spoke to on the
phone had no idea!
Moral of the story: DONT install UPnP.
