Two days ago my wife's computer froze while loading mup.sys. I first thought of a
corrupted Windows system file, and disabled mup.sys (which can be safely disabled
for anyone not using a Novell network). No joy. Fiddling with BIOS and ACPI settings
didn't make any difference.
After carefully reading what people posted on this thread I decided to investigate
the hardware branch.
I tried to remove, shuffle and insert back all removable, shuffable and insertable
things on the machine. Still no luck.
Then I borrowed a memory bank from a collegue and inserted it instead of the original
one and in a different slot. Bingo! After two nervous days of me cursing and the
machine testing the limits of my knowledge, the damn thing finally booted and started
to behave like in its best days.
So, I would like to add one more to the million of reasons people enumerated on this
thread why Win XP may freeze while loading mup.sys: crappy memory chip.
