As you said...

"Nothing is perfect"...

and understanding that , trying to find the perfect
encryption and storage method will not get
you anywhere...

A thumb drive would not be my choice for storage....
they are too susceptable to static...
I'd choose a DVD or a good brand name CD...

But having said all that , if whatever information
you are attempting to protect is REALLY that
important ,then it should not be on your computer...

It should be in some sort of hard copy and stored
off site , like in a safe deposit box...

If that doesn't work for you and you MUST have it on
your computer , then get over your paranoia or
put everything on a laptop and carry it on your person
at all times...

There's no realistic answer to your question....

try some "light" reading by Bruce Schneier , the
current master of things encryption related.....
and look into implementations of his Blowfish
algorithm...

http://www.schneier.com/

and yes , being paranoid doesn't make you wrong...
it just makes you paranoid...

unless you have some reason for the men in black
to be interested in you ,then it's all in your head....
