The little red shield icon can be hidden. It'll still be there, but there won't be any balloon reminders from it. Right-click your taskbar and click properties. Click the customize button, select Windows Security Alerts, pull down the drop-down list, and select "always hide." Ok out. It's still there, just hidden.
