I am having very similar problems and found this link by googling for "AC97 driver
Windows stop message". I think this is your problem but I don't know how to get this
horrible, crashing driver completely off my system. I installed Windows XP sp2 on
my pc (after a trashing of it - whoops!) and when I installed this driver, halfway
through installing I got the STOP message like you mention. Afterwards, many STOP
messages occurred for many reasons and so I installed again (2 days later.) Nice
and stable, everything works great, then I finally decide to install the useless
Vinyl AC97 WDM driver and STOP again. This driver should be renamed Windows-System-STOP-utility.
I have now gone into control panel and uninstalled the driver but I got a STOP message
when this occurred too so don't know if it was successful which is why I am now browsing
Google. Hope this helps. Vinyl AC97 - wot a piece of shit!
