I've never seen AVG mess up any computer - so I suspect your installation is not
the most stable. What else have you got installed?
Also, there's no reason ICS shouldn't work with SP2 - and without SP1 or SP2 you
are missing out on windows security updates (which may also be over-rated, but...)
I can't really advise as I wouldn't do things the way you have (ie, I'd have sp2
and all updates installed, XP firewall and AVG anti-virus and either AVG or Windows
Defender anti-spyware. Btw - I do think Avast is a good anti-virus too - just wouldn't
change away from AVG - but as i said I've never seen it mess up a machine). As you
say, you'll probably go back to ZA & AVG - me, I'd be worried that things that should
work don't - I'd probably do a clean install in your position - or at least a repair
reinstall - to get back to a definitely stable position. But you should do what you're
most comfortable with.
