If your data is important then the first thing you should do is save it. Best way
I can think of to do this is buy a new hard drive. Remove the current one for now,
put the new one in and install XP. Once that's done, change the jumper on the old
drive from Master or Cable Select to Slave and install it.
If there is hardware damage this may not be possible so you will have to install
the drive in another computer as slave to save the data or get your's fixed (with
the new drive installed, not the old one) then proceed as above when it's working
again.
Whether you get your current system working again or end up buying a new one, the
data will still be on the old drive when you finally get to the point where you can
install it as a slave drive.
Now backup any data you don't want to lose.
