if I install a new drive with the old then install Win XP with my
original disks on the new drive will there be any problems because the new won't
have all the updates?
You will definately not have all the updates. Also, if your system is at SP2 + all
updates and your CD is at SP1 then you will have to install SP2 plus all 70 or so
updates. YOu can get around the SP2 part by creating a new XP CD slipstreamed with
SP2 then use it to install with. Instructions follow:
The simplest way to create a Bootable Windows XP Pro or Home Installation CD Slipstreamed
with SP2 is to use Autostreamer. You point to your XP Pro CD, the SP2 Service Pack
.exe file, give it a path to write the .iso file to and off it goes.
In 5 or 10 minutes you have a .iso file that you can burn to CD with almost any CD
burner program you want to use. I used Roxio 7. Then you install using the new CD.
Here is the link to Autostreamer:

You can download the SP2 .exe here:

I have seen people mention slipstreaming the updates with the new CD also but I have
not come across any instructions on how to do that. If it can be done then you could
download all the updates and slipstream them to the new CD along with SP2.
if I add the old to another computer could there be conflicts for the same reason?
No, the drive should be treated as a secondary drive with data on it, not as a boot
device.
I have both new and old drive in the same computer and the old has a virus that caused
my problem, will the infection spread to the new drive and leave me with the same
problem
No, not unless you run programs from the old drive somehow that spread an existing
infection. What I suggested was to just save your data then format the drive, thus
wiping out everything.
