IF you aren't interested in installing a program just to keep your icons in place... try this: when your desktop is all organised the way you like it; hit "PRT SCR" button on your keyboard. then, go into a simple graphics editing program and select "edit/paste as new image" and presto, you now have a copy (picture) of your desktop all organised the way you like it. of course, this means you will have to still redo the icons manually, but at least the job is way easier having a copy of how they're all placed, and where!
