Question about 'Downloading Windows Updates'

I have a question about Downloading Windows Updates:

After having just recently re-installed windows XP Home on my sons PC using the recovery disks supplied with the PC (Acer Aspire G600P) I then had to install service pack 2 again using the disk obtained from Microsoft. Everything seemed to be working fine for a few days and he had reinstallled most of his games and using them OK. Then after a windows auto update which involved downloading around 64 updates, we can now no longer install any new software, as we get an error message stating that the software exe file has encountered a problem and has to shut down. If we restore back to the point before the windows update we can then install the game. Does this mean that one of the 64 updates is causing this problem? If anyone has any answers/ideas I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks
