My laptop was running XP Professional with SP2 and all the latest patches when I
lost the Device Mgr view, and still is after the fix! The regedt32 solution worked
for me, since my device manager wasn't showing even the hostname of the machine!
Plug and Play was enabled; everything in MSCONFIG that was suppose to be on, was
on; Ran several SpyWare programs to make sure no spyware had affected the Device
Mgr; etc.. But after editing the suggested key(s), my registry showed two;..ControlSet001\Enum
& ControlSet002\Enum In the permissions for Enum, I just added System (Full Control)
and Everyone (Read Only) since these were missing to begin with. Restarted the laptop,
and my Device Mgr view is back and everthing is working!
