i had the same error after a new hard drive installed on a gigabyte 8knxp board,
1 gig elixir 333 ram. switched board to an abit vt7, i got the same error. it will
run win98 and win me all day long no problem. until the xp upgrade or full install
is attempted it repeats same error message.i just installed thie same xp cd on Syntax
478 865pe board with 100 percent success just days ago.Actually i started with the
upgrade disk and it failed, then used a new drive with the full xp cd and it failed
on the gigabyte board.Suspect was bad power supply that burned the dvdrw drive to
the point it started to smell..may have ruined both cd's also
