Right click my computer, and select manage. Click on the + next to services and applications. Now click on the services icon, and maximise the page.

Find the automatic updates entry. Is it started? If not, right click on it. Select properties, and under startup type choose automatic. Click on the Start button. Click apply, ok. Now close the window, and try to run the Windows update programme again.

Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Another possability is that the SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupted: Try the following, see if it fixes it:

Turn off Automatic Update Service
1) Run Services. msc then ok
2) Rt. click Automatic Update Service
3) Stop the service

Rename the Software Distribution folder
1) Run explorer %systemroot%
2) Rt. click The SoftwareDistribution folder
3) Rename it to SoftwareDistribution.old
4) Enter to secure the change
5) Start
6) Run services.msc
7) Rt. click Automatic Update Services
8) Click Start
