"Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning" Misfortune

If you get a BSOD after installing a Roxio Creator product on XP, these are the steps
to get your system back. It includes the link above to get CD/DVD devices back.
This program is supposedly a repackage of Easy CD Creator 6 (originally released
2003?), which has worked fine for me in the past. Unfortunately, now when I install
this repackaged version it crashes my system on first reboot with a Blue Screen Of
Death. (If you don't have your system set to actually read a BSOD, it will just flash
the BSOD.)
If this happens to you I've discovered how to fix it, but it's a little involved.
The good news is that your system is not lost!
1. Restart your computer into "Safe Mode" (slowly tap F8 after pushing the power
button), then when prompted, "Administrator".
2. Click Start, right-click My Computer, select Explore.
3. Navigate to C:/Windows/System32/Drivers
4. Rename "cdr4_xp.sys" to "cdr4_xp.old" (This is the root of your trouble, but you
must follow the next steps to get your computer back.)
5. Navigate to C:/Program Files/Common Files/Roxio Shared
6. Right-click the Roxio Shared folder and select Delete.
7. Navigate to C:/Program Files/Roxio
8. Right-click the Roxio folder and select Delete.
9. Reboot now to your normal desktop. (Click Start, Turn Off Computer, Restart) You
may get a minor error about a missing program.
10. Click Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs
11. Click on Easy CD & DVD Creator and select Remove.
12. At this point you may be missing your CD and/or DVD drives. You can check by
double-clicking My Computer. If your CD/DVD drives are missing, you can get them
back by copy-and-pasting the following link into Internet Explorer ONLY. (You will
be challenged about running it and the publisher...ALLOW it to run) [I am asking
you to run a script file, which is a BIG no-no on the internet. It's a matter of
trust...but there are few options here. I had to trust, and run it too. It worked!]

Reboot once more, and that's it - back to normal - DON'T reinstall Easy CD & DVD
Burning because you will have to through all of this again.
