Okay, just incase anyone's still reading this forum...
Raptor, I too noticed that when I go into customizing hidden icons, probably almost
30 things are listed, their icons are messed up, and half of them are for programs
that I uninstalled long ago. Ugh.
I've been dealing with this problem for ages, mostly just putting up with it... finally
got fed up and chatted with Gateway help, who told me the only solution was to wipe
the hard drive and start over, which I found APPALLING and said so, that there must
be something else to do, and they said no and then tried to kick me off the chat
as quickly as possible, which I found even more appalling. So much for their "friendly
tech support..." riiight.
So faced with starting over from scratch I started an internet search of my own and
found this site. Having just found it, I haven't tried any of the fixes yet (except
the band-aid of logging off and logging back on, which worked but of course isn't
permanent). But I notice Raptor's the only one to mention the messed up icons, which
to me says this is a registry problem just as much as a timing problem. The system
tray stuff won't load unless you give it ample time, that seems to be a determining
factor for many people; but why does it need so much time? In my case, it seems that
it needs time because it's busy trying to find like 28 programs that AREN'T THERE.
And for some people, maybe it just gives up. So my first plan is to check out the
registry and see if I can clean stuff up... I definitely don't need 3 icons for AOL
messenger trying to start when it isn't even on my computer anymore... and I don't
want a band-aid, I want this SOLVED.
I'll update if it works... wish me luck!
