Speed difference between two computer-computer connections

Hi. I need to connect my two computers together in order to transfer large data amounts (150 megabytes and more) from one to the other. My network is composed of a router connected to the internet, and my two machines each connected with ethernet cables to the router. Both run winxp professional.
I tried to connect the two computers together through the router, by joining the same Workgroup and sharing out a folder. The connection works, but it is slow: it takes about 20 minutes to transfer 150 mebabytes of data.
Then I made a direct connection (no router in the middle) between the two computers, with a crossover cable between the two network cards. The connection works and is much faster: now it takes about 2 minutes to transfer the same data amount. This means the connection has a speed of about 10 megabits per second.

Why is the first connection so slow? The router (Billion Bipac 6600) supports 10 megabits and 100 megabits transfer speeds. Both network cards obviously support at least 10 megabits/s too. Is there any setting in the router or something that I have forgotten?
