Your problems probably started there. If it checks out, read on... I think xp is DOA. Look for the xp sticker on the case. If it is still there, go to the IBM site and look for "replacing recovery discs". You should be able to get them for about $20 with standard shipping. A download (for burning) may be available even cheaper, if not free.
