Thanks again, Mark! Unfortunately, none of your suggested techniques and tools did
the job (and I did try them most thoroughly). Note also that I examined it with
G Anti-Virus tool, an incredibly powerful tool that employs both the Kaspersky and
the Bit Defender engines and takes an incredibly long time to operate. All failed
to find any problem. Dealing with a situation like this probably just isn't in their
designs.
I also had previously tried Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-aware SE, Zone Alarm anti-malware,
Panda, and Microsoft's tool. (And I tried the rest on the pages I've been directed
to here.) But the one that I have by far the most confidence in, A-Squared anti-malware,
did no more than the rest: Nothing.
Here's a guess as to why they're all missing the problem: Unlocker, Killbox and MoveOnBoot
would not even allow me to act on the folder (although for two of them it did show
up in their browsing routines). I'd try choose it, and then two of the programs
either did nothing or said there was nothing to delete! Killbox thought there was,
and promised to delete it next reboot, but did not. It's still there.
Isn't it possible that the native Windows routines for browsing to a specific folder
simply won't work with a name like this? Which would be precisely why the infector
created it with this name?
My guess is that I need some kind of special disk/file editor that bypasses the normal
Windows approaches. Any suggestions on such a tool?
