Thanks, Carol!
A-Squared might not have made a name for itself, but it certainly should have! Even
after running 5 other anti-malware/spyware tools, A-Squared found more than a dozen
pieces of malware that all the others missed. Now, I know well that a lot of the
junk anti-malware/anti-virus tools out there deliberately exaggerate or even manufacture
hits in order to make a sale, but 100% of these discoveries were real (as backed
up on respected malware sites) and 80% of them were serious. I've never seen any
other tool do as well.
I downloaded and tried AVG anti-spyware (I'm fairly pleased with and regularly use
their anti-virus software). It found nothing in normal mode and nothing in safe mode,
just as I've come to expect after trying more than 25 different tools already.
Maybe I'll try SUPERAntispyware, but since you said AVG is better, I see little point.
As you can imagine, after trying 25+ tools, most of them with excellent reputations,
but can find nothing wrong with this folder or anything else , I need a new approach,
which I'll be trying with a bootable NTFS-capable CD and probably a disk editor or
two as well.
Panda was a real annoyance, though! I'd already tried my copy of Panda AV 2006 with
no luck, but I figured I'd try the 2007 version anyway. The online scan required
IE (I use Firefox), but I tried it with IE anyway. But the buttons wouldn't work!
I clicked and cliked and nothing worked (and yes, I disabled the pop-up blocker
and all other security features I could think of). So I tried to DL and install
the regular version, but the installer crashed horribly each and every time. Yeesh!
And I did clear out all my temp files that weren't in use. I actually have an excellent
cleaning utility that does that every reboot, but I did as you suggested anyway.
It made no difference.
But please know that I appreciate all the suggestions and advice I'm getting.
