Just to add, SpywareBlaster is good to have (and doesn't need to be running), but 
it will Not keep malware off your system as Mark implied. It will help, but many 
malwares are capable of disabling it's protection and any other protection you have 
installed. 

One of the best ways to prevent malware infections, is to Stop using IE as your main 
browser. Switch to more more secure, less malware prone browser as your main browser. 
IE is extremely vulnerable to malware infections. Firefox and Opera are recommended 
alternatives by security experts. Additionally, use a HOSTS file. See the link below 
for more info.
