can't login after initial startup/standby

I'm having an issue with logging in after resuming from standby on a couple of my
machines (XP Home Edition). It seems that only after the very first time I start
the computer (cold start), then enter standby, then try to login again, I have no
blinking cursor in the login box. Nothing will work to allow me to login again except
a restart. Once the computer has been restarted, standy will work correctly and allow
me login afterwards. No errors in event viiewer either.
Any ideas?
