Now that's really curious. I have both IE6 and IE7 on separate laptops and in both 
cases the width is NOT auto-set and I can drag the divider - and it stays there.

Is auto-width one of those obscure settings ? If not what's controlling this behaviour 
?

Following my own advice (!) I found little of relevance on Google.
