Making the move back to FAT32 is certainly not trivial, however the file system on
other computers on the network is irrelevant. In fact you can have both FAT32 and
NTFS on the same computer -- I do. NTFS has some advantages in a workplace environment,
since it has decent security whereas FAT32 offers no security from the prying eyes
of others using that computer. But most home users do not need the extra security
of NTFS and that extra security causes a multitude of inconveniences such as the
one you are experiencing. The only real advantage that NTFS has over FAT32 is the
security and its ability to handle files greater than 4GB. The 4GB limit is why I
have some NTFS partitions. There is a standard claim that NTFS provides better performance
for larger partitions, and that might be true. But there is no good reason to make
your system partition bigger than about 15 - 20GB, and FAT32 performs better for
smaller partitions. But best of all, it's a lot less trouble.
