Wow. Rich, Ven's step-by-step solution seems so complicated.
I'm trying to figure out what it's doing with regard to what caused the problem in
the first place - resetting everything from the hardware seems so drastic - but isn't
the problem the fact that the file is there but the operating system can't see it?
Why would one have to reset all the hardware and drivers like that to fix it -and
how did it get broken?
Anyway - it gave me an idea, I simply restored my computer to the day before the
problem and it solved it. HOWEVER, Audacity was gone and so were all my vst plugins
which reside in another place on my system (Common Files). I've had them for a very
long time - long before the day before the problem so how in the heck would a restore
remove them?
I checked out the directory structure in a DOS window and AUDACITY'S directory and
the VST_PLUGINs just are not there! So I instantly undid my RESTORE and figured
I'd give the difficult procedure a try - but when I put it back, everything was still
missing.
I have spent the day trying to hunt viruses or malware..
I'm clean as a whistle. I just reinstalled everything - but first I redid the restore
so the sound would work.
So far so good, it's like nothing was ever wrong. Soon , maybe I'll forget about
what happened and recall it as only a dream. I mean, there is nothing wrong, no
weird programs, no new installs I can think of... Just weird.
I don't suppose this has ever happened to anyone...
