I had to shout out thanks to Angela
and sergio_sh
for their immediate responses to the original problem.
I guess you'll all be pleased to hear that Microsoft finally (after 3 years) released
a knowledgebase report that explains the root cause of the loss of CD/DVD drives
as being uninstalling some software.
