Windows Update creates temp folders in C:\ and does not delete them

I have just installed Win XP Pro SP2 and am downloading all the updates (currently
124 and counting).
For each update, Windows Update automatically creates a folder straight in the C:\
directory, each containing one file only, an updated version of msxml4-KB927978-enu.log
- so I now have over 100 folders with names like C:\65fb5de93cb2b80bd69ed21d9bc4
cluttering up my C:\ directory.
1. Are these temp folders that should automatically delete (they don't)?
2. Can I safely delete them myself?
3. Better still, can I tell Windows Update to put them somewhere more sensible than
in C:\ (have hunted high and low for such a setting but so far no joy).
I have been unable to find this problem mentioned in these forums, so would greatly
appreciate any help anyone can give on this, thanks.
