This was only a partial fix to my problem. You also have to go to the following
key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.avi/OpenWithList/ and delete any entry except for wmplayer.exe.
then go to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.avi/PersistentHandler/ and delete the Default value and delete
the "avifiles" line below the Default line.
then go to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.avi/ShellEx/ and delete the Default value and delete any subfolders
underneath the ShellEx folder.
It's possible that only doing one of these 3 steps might work, or that only deleting
one of the programs listed in the OpenWithList might work, but I essentially restored
all the defaults for handling .avi files.
Hope this helps.
