Changed Sound scheme will not take

I have changed my sound scheme on mail notification in the events column and saved as ....apply....ok even restarted the computer and it makes no difference....mail still comes in with the usual BEEP. Have checked Tweak and "Beep for Errors"is ticked. Can anyone help as Microsoft want $80 AUS to help me with this....no way Cheers Susan
